Mr Tony Hughes-Johnson QC is an experienced Christchurch based commercial litigator specialising in local government and resource management law.

Profile

Tony Hughes-Johnson KC is a commercial litigator with wide-ranging experience in civil litigation at all levels of the courts.

Whilst his specialist area of practice has been local government and resource management law, he conducts a broadly based commercial litigation practice and is available to assist in a wide-range of court and advisory matters throughout New Zealand, including the provision of opinions.

Mediation

Mr Hughes-Johnson is available for appointment as a mediator to conduct mediations throughout New Zealand.

Arbitration

Mr Hughes-Johnson is a Fellow (Arbitration) of the Arbitrators’ and Mediators’ Institute of New Zealand Inc. and holds an appointment as Fellowship Admission Assessor for the Institute. 

Mr Hughes-Johnson is available for appointment as an arbitrator throughout New Zealand to determine commercial disputes.

He is also available to provide formal legal appraisals, whether binding or non-binding, in order to assist disputing parties to resolve disputes.

Local authority hearings

Mr Hughes-Johnson is accredited and available for appointment by local authorities as a hearings commissioner including appointment as panel chairperson.

Providing advice and handling litigation in relation to public and administrative law matters including judicial review.

Advice (including to local authorities) in relation to responsibilities/duties of local authorities ad local government liability issues and acting in litigation relating to these matters.

Providing advice in relation to all matters relating to estates and wills. Conducting litigation in relation to estate/will matters.

 

+ INQUIRiES 

The conduct of inquiries and investigations and commissions of inquiry.

 

+ Land Law

Providing advice in relation to land law issues including mortgage and lease issues. Handling litigation in relation to such issues.


+ responsibility & liability of company directors

Advice in relation to matters relating to the carrying out of duties of company directors including acting in litigation affecting company directors.

Providing advice in relation to trusts matters including charitable trusts and involvement in litigation regarding trust issues.

 

+ Compulsory Acquisition Matters

Including acquisition issues associated with the Canterbury Earthquake.

Advice (including to local authorities). Acting in litigation including matters before local authorities and Environment Court appeals and litigation.
